We live in in-between spaces - between birth and death, between day and night. In our dreams the in-between spaces of our consciousness are mirrored; in letters we read between the lines. And new networks have expanded the virtual in-between spaces; the betweenness of relationships has changed. In-between spaces are elements of cultural identity, spaces of interaction and special use.
Cities are alive because of in-between spaces. In autochthonous architectures, the in-between spaces serve to cope with climatic problems. In-between spaces define architectures according to their climate zones; they serve to cool or generate warmth - in Japanese architecture there is the "engava", in the houses of the arid climatic zone the Eiwan, and in the Venetian building "Spazio Centrale Passante".
